Re; Bowens 1000jws Digital heads.
Can anyone help with information about using studio lighting? I've tried to google the above mentioned digital heads, but not found any detailed information about how to use them.
I have never used digital heads. Does one need a sync lead, a dedicated camera flash lead, or are the above lights controllable wirelessly by the camera flash? I gather that digital heads have menus for functions, but I have no idea what they are other than power settings. As far as I can gather, power settings are not calibrated in stops.
Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks. I believe it's not good policy to incinerate your model. Apparently they don't like it.

Tom,
You will find it better if you can purchase a Flash Exposure Meter of your own.
You will find that some of the studios today do not have them and rely on the photo on the camera screen.
Being brought up on using film, I find this to be a bad idea has you can never be sure of the screen settings.
You will find that it is easy to pick up a s/h one at a low price.
I have had a Photoflash meter for a number of years and it has never let me down and is accurate to a 1/3 of a stop.
It also has no controls to play with just point and shoot. Which I find a good thing.
Enjoy your shoot with Sarah.
Also have you joined the BGAFD forum has yet?
And are you going to the InFocus show at the NEC in early March?

thanks for the responses
thanks for the responses folks. This site seems much superior to another one, mentioning no names, especially if that other name begins with a 'P'.
Damn! I couldn't be bothered about that snapshot of myself, now I've had to give it some attention. Just kidding :-) However, it looks like it will have to be replaced by a proper shot. Finding the time to set up a shot of oneself seems such a damn nuisance.
Thanks for the advice about a meter. One will be purchased. The screen on my camera can display a histogram of each shot.
My camera will synchronise at 1/200th or slower for external non-dedicated flash units. For my EX580II and the two EX430II units, a custom function allows the shutter to be fixed at 1/200th in AV mode when a flash is detected, and that's the way I normally us it. I turned that function off once and found that at 1/60th the fluorescent lighting in the room polluted the flash exposure.
An umbrella and flash diffusers on all three units, while not perfect, usually gives reasonable results in domestic surroundings.
Thanks for the advice about particular studios they sound a better bet than some I've encountered.

Studio heads
I received a reply to my query. On a Sunday, no less! I told him the wrong camera, though. I upgraded to EOS550D some time ago.
It seems like his flash heads have built in sensors, unless I'm reading his cryptic answer wrong.

Hi,
I presume the studio flash heads control the flash exposure, rather than my
Canon EOS450D camera.
Do I meed a sync lead for your studio flash?
Regards
That's correct...
No you don't need a cable I have a IR remote that you use

The studio manager, Martin,
The studio manager, Martin, knew the EV of his lights. F11 1/125 ISO 100. From there, if the aperture was altered, it just meant altering the ISO to maintain the EV.
A flash meter has now been received from a company on ebay, very basic but it does the job. It cost £39.99. I'm glad it wasn't £40, because that would have broken the budget. :-)
Thanks for the advice everyone.
